From Here to Eternity - Caitlyn Doughty 2017
From Here to Eternity is a book written by YouTube star/Mortician who lived in California, but grew up in Hawaii. Doughty runs her own eco-friendly and modern funeral parlour Clarity Funerals & Cremation and is the founder of The Order of the Good Death which is a group which advocates for green burial, death positivity and embracing mortality.
While Doughty isn't an artist, I thought her content was very relevant to my practice this year, as she speaks a lot about death positivity and acceptance.
The book 'From Here to Eternity' is a series of experiences Doughty had while travelling the world to explore and learn about different death rituals, customs and mindsets. Doughty goes to places such as Indonesia, Mexico, Japan, Spain, Colorado, Bolivia, California and North Carolina. The book dives into death customs like Ma'nene which is an Indonesian ritual for the dead. The famous mummified bodies we've all heard about from Indonesia are explained and given a sense of comfort, education and understanding, rather than us from the Western world laughing or being horrified of the rituals.
I wanted to mention this book in my research because while it's not art related it certainly struck a chord with me, especially as I was grieving for a lot of last year. It opened my eyes to working more closely with death and not fearing it. I think this book helped evolve my practice.
