Week 7 Digital Images - 15th to 19th March

Digitally Manipulated Images

During week 7 - which was my first week back in the studio since March 2020 I decided to create some weird, uncomfortable and very high contrast images using photographs I took of Bert the Studio Skeleton (relating to Van Gogh, Pieter Claesz and Cezanne's work with skulls).

The photographs I took were taken in 2019 and I decided because I didn't have access to Bert (and still don't) that i'd make use of the resources I had access to.

The photographs are of various profile shots to highlight proportion and shape. The original plan for these photographs was to create lino prints from them but because I didn't have access to the print workshop I was unable to do this.

So I decided to open photoshop, cut out the background and my hands then use them for collages.

The background being cut away from the skull gave me a few ideas, including bitmapping the images.

I then decided to work more onto them in photoshop, before creating some polaroid style prints using them, which I planned to put into collages.

While I was in the studio, Dan suggested that I could create a piece in which, 3 skulls could be placed together to create a three-headed skull.

This worked really well and I decided to create a lino print using this design, as well as turning them into sheer black and white images

These are the polaroid style bitmapped images

I think this piece works quite well because to me it reminds me of old-fashioned anatomy illustrations.
