Death in Art - Contemporary Art

Contextual Research

Jolene Lupo

Jolene Lupo is an NYC-based artist and forensic photographer. Her work is mainly photography-based with tin-type processes and experimental photography. I came across her work while researching Caitlin Doughty's (From Here to Eternity) book. The two did a project using tin-type processes to recreate Victorian Mourning Photos. Lupo's work puts the macabre, uncomfortable, and unseen aspects of death straight into the front when you look at her work.

David Orr

David Orr is an American Artist who uses photography to portray the theme of mortality and death. Orr's work is visually stunning and captures death by photographing skulls (I believe at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia) and uses symmetry to create beautiful pieces, his work also includes mandalas and textures.
